it has this structure

maybe u can find a wordpress plugin

maybe disable "never show resized versions of images"

or disable your plugin that creates the webp images

all these different image sizes like for example: 512w, should load an image that is 512px.

but here, it kind of links to "https://i0.wp.com/www.maximilianborchardt.de/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/170419-95-scaled-e1708952758449.jpg?resize=512%2C769&ssl=1"

instead of 170419-95-scaled-e1708952758449-512…

and that doesn't seem to work. it seems like when i open this url https://i0.wp.com/www.maximilianborchardt.de/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/170419-95-scaled-e1708952758449.jpg?resize=512%2C769&ssl=1

then the full sized image is loaded instead of the 512px width image

we never have to use a picture or any hover effect
any click on a link that is to a page that is set to an overlay will open it as an overlay

you can find a popup plugin for wordpress
there must be one where it just creates a popup immediately

u can use custom css position:fixed; to make a link that links to an overlay page fixed

In the gridder, right click on the element and choose "set html class and id". For "html class" enter:

(make sure u actually right-click on the stack element, not on one of the elements inside the stack)

Enter the custom css in "lay options" -> "custom css & html":
