Lightbox - Turn off Image Resizing?

I've noticed that it takes a while to upload images into the media library. I realize now that it is because during the upload a duplicate is made, in addition to the original that is resized to 1920 x 1281. Is there a way to skip this process so that the original file appears in the lightbox slideshow?

The resize effects the image quality and upload time.

My original file: 01-original.jpg dimensions: 2697 × 1800
Duplicate: 01-original-1920x1281.jpg (this is the one that appears when you're in lightbox mode)

I've looked under
Settings > Media and
Lay Options > Lightbox addon

but haven't found a solution

Any help would be of great help.

Hey,
When you upload an image multiple sizes of it are generated. not just 1920, but 1280, 1024, 768, 512 and 256 :D

Now when an image is shown on your website, the appropriate size is shown based on the pixelarea that your image is filling. And based on retina or not (pixel density).

So in short, you can't turn off that image resizing, its a core part of lay theme. I'm sure that if you had like 10 images in your lightbox, that are all over 2500px wide, then it would take a very long time to load huh?

Hm, maybe you are using such a big screen that 1920px wide as the max size is not enough. I mean I could add more bigger sizes for a next update.

I'm building a photography portfolio site. The point of a photography portfolio site is to display hi quality photographs.

Retina iMac displays - widely used in the creative field - have a resolution of 4096 x 2304. That is over double the resolution of the largest file produced by laytheme. Even 15" iMacs (2880x1800) are almost double the resolution of your max image size.

Anyone on a 4K iMac who clicks into full screen lightbox mode while viewing a website powered by laytheme, will be served an image that is oversampled by more than 200%. This destroys fine detail and subtle colors.

That's probably not ideal for professional photographers, huh?

Safari, Firefox or any web browser is not suitable for image interpolation. Professional photographers sell their services based on image quality. It makes no sense that you've built this theme to prioritize small image size over image quality.

And your algorithm for image resizing is garbage, it blurs fine details.

It's probably a bit short sighted to code a limit on image size into a commercial theme that is ostensibly designed to show off the quality of someone's creative work, huh?

Probably requires some rethinking, huh? Or do you work on a 1024x768 display with dial up modem?

Yea u're right, I think a good solution is to have more bigger sizes and not just 1920 as the biggest one. Also an option to only show the original full-res would be good.

I'm gonna work on that for lay theme and for the lightbox. I will let you know when that's done, then u can test it!

Now there is a Lay Theme update available: 1.7.1
You will have a new option in: "Lay Options" → "Misc Options" → "Never show resized versions of your images"
You can try that. That might slow down the loading of the images.

I also added more sizes in my code (2560, 3200, 3840, 4096). So in case you want to keep using the normal way lay theme shows images, now it will also show bigger ones.

For the Lightbox there is now an update 1.2.1 which has a new similar setting:
"Lay Options" -> "Lightbox Addon" -> "Never show resized versions of your images"
