Site occasionaly crashes on mobile device/browser (iPhone 12)
-
Hi there community,
I recently discovered a bug where Safari crashes on a mobile device (couldn’t reproduce this on desktop):
When browsing through the projects on this site and then tapping the logo in the top left to go back to the frontpage the phone turns black, shows a quick loading animation circle and then goes to the lock screen.
It mostly happened when I was switching really fast between pages/projects.The only active plugins are BackWPup, Lay Theme Carousel, SVG Support and Wordfence. There’s only a minor custom function running to randomly switch the logos (which is only done during a full reload).
Any help or a fix would be very much apprechiated!
Cheers! -
hey!
mmh sorry to hear about that
i tried to reproduce this on my iphone 12 pro but i couldnt reproduce it :/
you could try and activate lay options → disable ajax mode / compatibility mode and that might fix it -
Thank you @arminunruh,
yeah, disable ajax mode might fix it but unfortunately would also disable the function of my random logos and the page-transitions. 😕
A friend of mine told me about this while browsing said page with his iPhone 12 Pro.
I can reproduce it with my 12 Mini while quickly browsing through projects vianext project →
then jump back to the front page via tap on the logo or the work link whilst the images are loading.
It also happens when tapping projects and jumping back to the forntpage via the logo or the work link over and over again.I know It’s an edgecase, but don’t think it has to do with the page setup, though. It’s all pretty simple with very minimal custom code.

@edgrbnz i have this sometimes too, and I think it is device-memory related. Maybe the iPhone resets itself because there is too much going on on the screen, as you say you "switch real fast between pages" which is not something a normal user does.

Hi @felix_rabe yeah, that sounds reasonable. As stated above: I’m well aware that it’s an edgecase.
Nonetheless it was a colleague of mine who told me that this is happening on his mobile device¹ – Otherwise I would never have looked into this – So there’s at least one person who has encountered that issue.
My hope is that there’s something that can be done inside Lay Theme to optimize this a bit.
¹ He’s using an iPhone 12 Pro which should have more memory available than my 12 Mini does.

Dear @edgrbnz @felix_rabe
Will still forward this for future as is obviously important :)
best wishes
