I can't update from within wordpress to 2.5.3

I love this theme truly, I have the Laytheme with fullscreen slider and another site with Lightbox. My main site the one with the fullscreen slider has been stuck on version 1.7.8 and I could never updated, I checked permissions but I have even set wp-content to 777 and all its folders...
What else can I do?

do you have the license?
You need to update everyting. ALl the plugins, Laytheme and Wordpress.
Let me know if that works.
