Strange letter spacing in menu + custom css for single elements in grid

Hello!

I’m new with Lay Theme (and a css beginner). There are two things I’m struggling with:

1. I’d like to know if I can apply custom-css to project thumbnails when they are part of a grid (a Thumbnail Grid or Element Grid). I managed to apply it to single elements, but didn’t find to add a hover effect to individual project thumbnails when they are part of a grid.

Here is a screenshot:

2. There is an unusually small letter spacing in one of the menu items (see 'Profil' between 'f' and 'i'. Screenshot below:

I can’t answer your question #1 regarding the custom css and project thumbnails.

But the unusual letterspacing probably is a ligature, which is common to have between f+f, f+i, f+l, etc. to optimise legibility.
It depends on the font but you may be able to switch off the ligature settings via custom css. You can test these settings over here and copy-paste the corresponding code into your custom-css inside lay afterwards.

Usually these things (f+f, f+i, f+l) get optimised with kerning and ligatures are only an option. In the case of Helvetica it seems like that these standard ligatures are baked in. Which means, that you probably cannot deactivate it since it’s the basic version of the font.

If you want to stick with Helvetica / Arial your only option would be to not use that much letterspacing. If you want to stick to your letterspacing you could:

• Make these links uppercase.
• License a different neo-grotesque webfont. (eg: Neue Haas Unica, GT America, Favorit, Nimbus Sans, Neue Helvetica,…)

it is not yet possible to address specific elements in the element gridder.
Also I agree with @edgrbnz. Try a different font or a different version of the font you use.
