A site we've inherited is weighing in at around 3.5GB. There are a few large image files but nothing to warrant 3.5GB. How can we optimise it?

Are there extra LayTheme elements we can remove? If so, how?

      Thanks.

this is probably because of all of the files in the upload folder

for every image that is uploaded, multiple sizes of it are generated.
these should not have very large file sizes.

but the original files that are uploaded can be quite big.
sometimes people upload hundreds of images that each are multiple megabytes big. and then they dont use all of them on their website, however these are still in the uploads folder.

you can go through your website and find all images that are being used.
now delete all unused images from the media library.

if you want to move your website instead of downloading all files one by one, use a migrating plugin. it works faster cause most of them zip the whole website and you can download this as one big file which is much faster.

also you could just update your webhosting package if you run out of disk space on your website.

im not sure what you want to achieve with having less files on your server. why is a 3.5gb website bad?

@arminunruh said in Optimising heavy site and removing unwanted LayTheme elements:

Thank you for your reply. A few questions:

"for every image that is uploaded, multiple sizes of it are generated."

Is this because it is creating images for mobile and other breakpoints. Is there any documentation on this?

"im not sure what you want to achieve with having less files on your server. why is a 3.5gb website bad?"

for efficiency, best practice and lower energy/carbon footprint

are there additional themes or elements that are loaded to the system as default, but aren't necessarily used? How do we find these?

these are the image sizes that are generated:

            '_265', '_512', '_768', '_1024', '_1280', '_1920', '_2560', '_3200', '_3840', '_4096'

            these are the pixel widths

            so 768px and so on

using the image srcset, only the correct size is loaded into the browser, based on the width of the image in the current browser and device

this is more performant than just loading the original image

so just because your uploads folder is very large it doesnt mean your website is slow when you visit it

you can disable all plugins, lay theme works without any extra plugins
but if you want to use any addons → laytheme.com click "addons" you need to keep them activated

you can send me your website url and such so i can take a look myself:

can you send your website address, /wp-admin/ username and password and a link to this topic to info@laytheme.com?

            Before you post

Use the Search Feature. Maybe there is already a solution to your issue.

            1. Update Lay Theme and all Lay Theme Addons
            2. Disable all Plugins
            3. Go to Lay Options → Custom CSS & HTML, click "Turn Off All Custom Code ", click "Save Changes"
            4. Now see if your problem solved itself
            5. Go here, see if your problem is listed here:
            Troubleshooting

            When you post:
            1. Post a link to where the problem is
            2. If the problem is difficult to explain, post screenshots / link to a video to explain it

            Thanks!
