Custom menu style

Hello everyone.
I'm currently setting up a news portfolio website and I want to create a specific menu style as shown in the picture. does anyone know how to make something like this? would be super appreciated.thanks for your help

at the moment this is only possible using css
i think its a pretty nice design, i will write it down and maybe create some settings for it in the customizer one day!

Maybe you can help me with the css code? I managed to get it to work, but it does not look as clean as the example above.

Before you post:
Use the Search Feature. Maybe there is already a solution to your issue.
1. Update Lay Theme and all Lay Theme Addons
2. Disable all Plugins
3. Go to Lay Options → Custom CSS & HTML, click "Turn Off All Custom Code ", click "Save Changes"
4. When using a WordPress Cache plugin, disable it or clear your cache.
