forgot to reply here after the issue was fixed to be honest ā sorry!
For the sake of completeness and for others might struggling with the same problem: In my case, the "Really Simple SSL" Plugin did not do the trick ā but disabling ajax / compatibility mode in lay options did! Might have had a problem with a plugin or something similar that wasn't on my radar.
