how about for the mobile version you create a custom phone layout?

and have carousels with a different sizing in there

or you could always use a portrait aspect ratio photo as the first in your carousel.

the carousels height and aspect ratio always stays the same, so its behaving correctly

if you want the image to be aligned to the top
go to lay options → carousel addon
and set this setting:
