ok it seems like the file permissions were set in a way were files couldn't be accessed via the browsers and we fixed it via FTP

It’s a small alumni network of an art school, and the budget is correspondingly quite limited. :-S There are some plugins that seem to be what I’m looking for, but you have to pay without testing them in advance, which feels a bit weird.
