Custom frontpage via Child Theme

Hello.
We would like to create a custom front page, and I am wondering wheather that is possible by extending Lay Theme via a Child Theme?
We would use Lay Theme, except for the front page.

we do not recommend to use child themes or modify the theme.
If updates will happen, the will not apply.Best!
