Solid Background footer

Hi Guys,
might have a simple question:

i have a footer with some words.
When I insert long passages of text it runs above the footer and makes it hard to read.

How do I make a solid white background around the footer, that the texts aren't colliding?

So far I used this custom css:
#footer-region{
position: fixed;
bottom: 0;
left: 0;
width: 100%;
color: white;
}

When I change the "color" the background is transparent … Just want a solid white background behind the footer.

Any help?
