Carousel Add-On: Prev/Next on linked images

Hi there,

I want to use the carousel add-on as a project slider on my homepage. It seems like the custom prev/next buttons are getting blocked, as soon as I link an image.
This seems reasonable to me, since two functions cannot take place at the same position. Anyways, is there a smart solution?
For example, that prev/next are displayed only at the edge of the image and you're able to activate the link via click in the middle area?

Prev/Next outside the image or fixed on the image are unfortunately no options in my case.

well at the moment you can only add buttons or dots below
